Govt slammed as families with working adult children living at home now face significant rent increases

Rent increases are expected for families with adult children living at home who are employed, as local authorities adjust charges for “subsidiary earners.”

South Dublin County Council has indicated it intends to raise rent for household members earning above the social housing income threshold of between €40,000 and €47,000 a year, reports Breaking News.

The proposed changes would affect around 21,000 tenancies in the county, with the council planning to increase the extra rent charged for these earners.

The Irish Independent reports that some tenants in South Dublin are already paying €135 more in rent than the national average, reports Breaking News.

The plan has drawn criticism from local representatives, who argue that parents cannot control the income of their adult children, the paper added.

Data from Eurostat indicates that the average age for young people leaving the parental home in Ireland is nearly 27 years old, reports Breaking News.

With young adults staying in the family home for longer, councils are seeking contributions from them towards rent if they have a salary.
