Govt will complete full term ahead of election, says Taoiseach

According to the Taoiseach, he is honouring his pledge to see the Government through to the end of its mandate, reports RTE.

However, Simon Harris stated “that [election] is not all that far away” while speaking at the Ibec President’s dinner in Dublin tonight.

His remarks coincide with an increase of conjecture over when the next general election will take place.

Announcing to the crowd that this was his 150th day on the job, Mr. Harris vowed to give Taoiseach every day of his career his all, reports RTE.

He stated that voters would have a clear option when the election time comes.

“Pragmatism, populism. Hope or hopelessness. Unity and putting the shoulder to the wheel and working with people, or dividing them, the off with the head brigade every time there is a crisis,” he said, reports RTE.

Mr. Harris stated that while the nation undoubtedly has difficulties, these obstacles may be overcome by cooperating.

Expectations of a “giveaway” budget have grown in recent weeks, fuelling speculation that the general election may happen in the days and weeks that follow the Budget on October 1, reports RTE.

A Sinn Féin spokesman responded to the remarks by saying that Mr. Harris “seems more intent on glib soundbites and speculation than focussing on tackling the myriad problems 13 years of Fine Gael in government have created”.

The spokesman went on to say that “this coalition is out of ideas and the political will to govern fairly or effectively” and that “soundbites will not fix the crises in housing, homelessness, healthcare, and cost of living,” reports RTE.
