GPs could be given financial incentives to open medical practices in rural areas

Financial incentives for GP offices in larger towns to open satellite surgeries in smaller rural regions may soon be available, reports RTE.

Chief Whip of the Government Hildegarde Naughton stated that the HSE is now working on the project.

The decision was made after the Dáil was informed that two thirds of overworked general practitioners in rural Ireland are unable to accept new patients.

According to TDs, there is also a two-week wait in many locations to see a doctor for non-emergency patients, reports RTE.

The Rural Independent Group (RIG) has presented a motion to the Dáil on healthcare services in rural communities. The motion is now being discussed.

The RIG wants to form an interdepartmental committee to start looking for rapid fixes to enhance general practitioner services across the entire nation, reports RTE.
