Last week the HSE issued a warning to the public to be alert about the possibility of contracting Lyme Disease, and now that call has been echoed by GP’s across the country who have warned everyone who may have been bitten by a spider-like creature to contact their GP if they experience any unusual symptoms.
Doctor’s say although Lyme disease does not display many symptoms, some people can develop flu-like symptoms such as headaches, sore throat, muscle aches and fatigue. They also say complications can occur in the nervous system, joints, heart or other organs if symptoms are left untreated.
GP’s are advising anyone who gets a rash or any other unusual symptoms from a tick bite to contact their doctor immediately. The diagnose of Lyme disease can be found after a physical examination, medical history and blood tests, and once the tick is removed within a few hours, the risk of infection is low.
Doctors say ramblers, campers, mountain bikers, and others who work and walk in forested or grassy areas must be vigilant against tick bites.
