A portly grandfather is claiming his morbid obesity saved his life as his fall down a stairs in Wetherspoons was broken by his fat gut.

The same 15 step stairs claimed the life of another unfortunate punter in his 40’s who suffered a heart attack after his fall last Sunday while Colin Hayes (61) says he is only alive today as the brunt of his bad fall was bore by his stomach in the Bournemouth Wetherspoons last August.

The Metro UK reported that Mr Hayes said:
“I don’t remember anything about the fall, but after I came around in hospital the doctors told me that had I been slimmer I would probably be dead. It was my stomach that got in the way and stopped me falling straight on my head. It must have taken the brunt of the impact.”

The bulging bellied grandad was hospitalised for four days and has suffered post-concussion syndrome.

Meanwhile, a JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said:
“A company representative has met with environmental health officers from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. They stated that in their opinion no offences had been committed, and therefore no enforcement action was required as there was no risk to the public.”
