The grave of the first head of an independent Irish government, William T. Cosgrave, has today been vandalized and desecrated. The perpetrators knocked over the headstone, which split in two.
The Celtic Cross erected by Mr. Cosgrave’s family to mark the man’s final resting place had also been targeted in an attack over the last couple of days and destroyed.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, said that the desecration was ‘beneath contempt.’
Goldenbridge Cemetery, in Inchicore, Dublin, has been subjected to vandalism in the last few months. In this latest incident, several other graves were also damaged.
Gardai are investigating.
