Harris claims ‘new way forward’ as she accepts presidential nomination

In front of an enthusiastic audience in Chicago, Kamala Harris received the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination and promised a “new way forward” if she defeats Republican Donald Trump in November’s election, reports RTE.

The 59-yr-old, who has seen one of the most remarkable political comebacks in US history, attempted to project a presidential tone while delivering a message of opportunity and togetherness for all Americans.

She took a harsh stance against Mr. Trump, saying he was attempting to “take our country” backwards and that he had been cosying up to foreign “tyrants” like Vladimir Putin.

Drawing a stark contrast with Mr. Trump, Ms. Harris made a passionate plea to put an end to the conflict in Gaza and to combat oppression worldwide.

“In the enduring struggle between democracy and tyranny, I know where I stand and I know where the United States belongs,” Ms Harris said, accusing Mr Trump of bowing down to dictators, reports RTE.

Less than a month ago, Ms. Harris became the Democratic nominee when President Joe Biden, 81, was persuaded to withdraw by his friends.

It was a strong speech for a candidate who, in the short time of her campaign, had not yet fully expressed her vision for the nation and had been subjected to a barrage of personal jabs from Mr. Trump, who labelled her weak on the international scene and made fun of her black and South Asian ancestry.

The speech outlined some general ideas of both home and international policy, but it omitted important details that she could be under pressure to provide in the coming weeks, reports RTE.

Ms. Harris made a promise to safeguard Israel, free the captives from Gaza, and put an end to the conflict in the Palestinian enclave following days of demonstrations by Palestinian supporters who were upset that they were not granted a speaking position at the convention.

“Now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done. And let me be clear, I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself,” she said to cheers, reports RTE.

“President Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realise their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination,” reports RTE.
