“Haven’t we suffered enough” – Not everyone happy with Bono and Imelda May roaring out tunes on Christmas Eve busk in Dublin

Many people on social media are saying that they’ve had enough of Bono and Imelda May and their Christmas Eve shenanigans.

Bono, Imelda May and Oscar winner Glen Hansard have participated in a Christmas Eve charity busking event in Dublin city centre, reports RTE.

Glen Hansard kicked off the yearly gathering this evening, informing the substantial audience that over 30 performers were ready to take the stage.

Among them were the group The Riptide Movement and singer-songwriter Shobsy, reports RTE.

U2 frontman Bono was among the final performers, delivering a version of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) alongside Imelda May.

The gathering concluded with an energetic rendition of The Pogues’ classic Fairytale Of New York, during which Imelda May sent birthday wishes to the late Shane MacGowan for “Happy birthday for tomorrow”, reports RTE.

The longstanding performance celebrates its 15th year and collects money for Dublin Simon Community, an organisation offering support to individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk across seven counties.

The gathering began in 2010 as a spontaneous sing-along on Grafton Street, reports RTE.

It has evolved into a more structured and formal occasion outside The Gaiety Theatre in the vicinity.

Hundreds of attendees joined in singing a selection of festive songs and popular tracks, with online viewers watching the livestream from places like Berlin, London and New York, reports RTE.

Among those present were Dublin residents home from overseas. Jason Hanaway, who divides his time between New York and Poland, described the occasion as “brilliant”, adding, “Only in Dublin”.

Maria Campani, from Italy, has made the city her home and says she comes every year: “It’s a great event that brings everyone together,” she said, reports RTE.
