Health officials concerned as the number of HIV cases double compared to 2021

Charities working to help people living with HIV have described the number of new cases of the virus since the beginning of this year as worrying.

Preliminary figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Center show that there were 293 reported HIV cases in the first six months of this year, compared to 145 in the same period in 2021.

According to RTE, HIV Ireland Chief Executive Stephen O’Hare said: “Our concern is that what we are seeing this year is a very rapid development in terms of the number of cases being presented.

“And that can be explained somewhat by the opening up of social venues and somewhat by the re-emerging of testing facilities, but it is a worry still we’re seeing so many cases at this time of the year.”
