Wildlife officers in India have sadly confirmed that a pregnant Elephant has died after eating a pineapple that was filled with firecrackers.

It is understood that the Elephant died after being found standing in the water at Kerala Silent Forest on May 27th.

Although it is not known how the Elephant came across the pineapple, local wildlife officials have confirmed that farmers frequently fill pineapples with firecrackers in order to keep wild boars away.

Speaking about the Elephant’s tragic passing, one local wildlife officer told reporters that a number of attempts were made to try and safe the Elephant however she refused to leave the despite the best efforts of officers.

It is believed that the Elephant which has been described as gentle and trusting sustained serious injuries to her mouth and tongue which left her being unable to eat.

Officers have since confirmed that she was cremated following her death which has now led to an investigation.

Although no arrests have yet been made local authorities say they are following a number of leads in the hope of finding out what led to the Elephant’s death.
