Authorities in France are working hard to contain wildfires in the South of the country as temperatures have exceeded 45C.

In a major effort hundreds of firefighters and air rescue crews are working to douse the fires which has reportedly spread across 600 hectares of land in the Gard region.

Although thankfully no casualties have yet been reported, it is believed that a number of homes and vehicles have been destroyed by the fires.

Authorities also say a man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting fires in a local village.

They added that a number of motorways have been closed following the outbreak.

The fires come as Europe is gripped with a sweltering heatwave that has seen France set record temperatures of 45.9C.
