President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina tested positive for covid-19 after taking an antigen test ahead of a planned visit to a school in Ballymun, Dublin.
A spokesperson said the two had mild symptoms of covid-19 and would be self-isolating for the next seven days. Higgins, who is 80, will continue to work from his office in Áras an Uachtaráin.
Higgins was first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2018 for a second seven-year term.
It is not yet known whether he will invite Ukrainian refugees into the Aras.
