Holohan: We’ve decided to keep the issue of mask wearing under review as we move forward

More and more people appear to no longer be wearing masks, you can see it around shops and even in public – less people appear to be wearing them.

Bar people who are medically exempt from wearing masks, in the not too distant future, masks may not be mandatory at all.

The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said that the issue of mask wearing in public places will be kept under review as we move forward.

Speaking at the National Public Health Emergency Team briefing this afternoon, Dr Holohan said that although mask wearing is required in indoor and outdoor settings it will be reviewed over the summer.

Dr Holohan told the briefing that other issues such as social distancing will be looked at but we won’t see any change before the end of June.

He added that the measures will be reviewed regularly by NPHET, but for now the message is the continued requirement for such measures is needed.
