It really would make you angry. The government is set to go on its “summer holidays” like little schoolchildren while 10,000 homeless people sleep on the streets, park benches or hotel rooms around the country.

It is a stark indictment of any Government, particularly one in a so-called ‘developed’ country, when the figure of 10,000 homeless men, women, and children, has remained for four months running.

The grim statistic includes 3,800 children, with a total of 1,700 families officially homeless.

In truth, the figure is bound to be much higher, as many people exist in ‘hidden homelessness’.

Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy, whose disastrous tenure in the department has led to the current debacle, released the figures today as children finish school for the summer, which means many will have nowhere to stay during the day.

Shocking and shameful images of entire families forced to eat their handout meals on the streets were widely seen in recent days, prompting outrage from all sectors against this failed Government.
