Shocking: 73-year-old pensioner left on life support after brutal assault in his County Sligo home by three masked men

In a horrific case from County Sligo that has devastated locals, Gardai have said that they are carrying out an extensive investigation to try and find the thugs that carried out a robbery on a pensioner’s home, leaving him on life support.

According to the Irish Mirror, 73-year-old Tom Niland was savagely beaten by three masked men who entered the bachelor’s house at Skreen, County Sligo.

Before stealing a few hundred euro, Mr. Niland was beaten so badly that he suffered a smashed eye socket and broken ribs.  After the thieves left, he crawled out of his house and got the attention of a passing driver.

Fr. Michael O’Hora was called to Mr. Niland’s bedside to say prayers as his condition is said to have deteriorated.  It is reported that he sustained brain damage in the horrific attack.  Locals are shocked and outraged to think that anyone could do something like this to an elderly man.

Mr. Niland’s cousin, Michael Walsh, told the Irish Mirror that they are very close and are like brothers, particularly since Mr. Niland has no siblings.  He said that while his cousin’s condition had initially improved somewhat, it then deteriorated and the family feel like they are “hoping for something like a miracle” to help the man recover.

Mr. Niland’s wallet was found near the scenc and Gardai are analysing it to try and get some more information on the three men.  They have also taken DNA from Mr. Niland’s clothing to help with the investigation. An appeal has gone out to the public, asking that they think very carefully about anything they might have seen.  Any small detail can help bring these heartless thugs to justice.
