A Fine Gael senator has stated that hospital parking fees for cancer patients must be immediately abolished, reports Breaking News.
“It is completely baffling that hospitals across Ireland continue to charge full parking fees to patients undergoing cancer treatments, with many offering no concessions whatsoever,” stated Senator Maria Byrne, the finance spokesman for Fine Gael Seanad.
“This behaviour needs to stop. The last thing cancer patients should be concerned about is the cost of parking; they already have to deal with so many other obstacles.”
Ms. Byrne brought out the “significant disparity” in parking costs across hospitals as well as the accessibility of concession information, reports Breaking News.
“Many patients are left in the dark by this inconsistent care, which exacerbates the challenges they already experience during a trying time.
“This circumstance is just one more illustration of the ongoing financial difficulties faced by cancer patients. We must recognise the toll this takes because many have been forced to quit their careers in order to concentrate on their treatment and rehabilitation,” reports Breaking News.
“Being sick is not a choice, and the financial burden that cancer patients bear is unfair,” Ms. Byrne continued. Hospital parking lots shouldn’t be making money off of those who are receiving care in the hospital because they have no other option. Instead, common sense and compassion must win out.”
Cancer patients can receive free parking at University Hospital Limerick, one of Munster’s three public hospitals.
This is a “positive step,” according to Ms. Byrne, but it need to be repeated across the country, reports Breaking News.
“This fundamental deference should be extended to all cancer patients, irrespective of their treatment location.
“Decency is more important than just fairness. The Irish Cancer Society has done a fantastic job drawing attention to this issue and demonstrating that we have a chance to take this small step and make a big difference.
“Removing these costs would demonstrate our support for cancer sufferers in their struggle. The lives of those who most need it could be significantly improved by this tiny deed,” reports Breaking News.
