Housing costs are still too high in Ireland, says Micheál Martin – even though his party contributed to the housing crisis

Housing costs in Ireland remain too high, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said, while insisting his Government is making meaningful progress in addressing the crisis.

Speaking to reporters at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Dublin, Mr Martin said the event would focus on the future and rejected suggestions that his party’s greatest achievements lay in the past. The event is marking the centenary of the party, which remains the largest in Ireland’s coalition Government, reports Breaking News.

Mr Martin acknowledged the ongoing scale of the housing challenge but insisted the Government was making progress in delivering social and affordable homes.

“We came back into Government in 2020, there have been about 177,000 new housing units developed since then. We have made a difference but it is not enough; we need to do more than that,” he said, reports Breaking News.

The Fianna Fáil leader also pointed to Ireland’s substantially increased population as a key driver of housing demand.

“2,500,000 more people are living in the country than there would have been in 1926 — that creates its own pressures,” he said, reports Breaking News.

A large pro-Palestinian protest was taking place outside the Dublin Royal Convention Centre during the Ard Fheis, reports Breaking News.
