“How could it only be status yellow?” – Met Eireann slammed for not giving better warning before Storm Chandra struck

Social media users have absolutely slammed Met Eireann online today, claiming that the national weather forecaster didn’t give people fair warning before Storm Chandra hit Ireland hard.

Storm Chandra slammed into Ireland with ferocious force today, unleashing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread chaos across the island. Named by the UK Met Office after the Hindu god of the moon, the third major storm of the season brought relentless downpours that caused rivers to burst their banks and trigger severe flooding in counties like Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, and Waterford.

In Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, homes were inundated, roads submerged, and residents evacuated by boat as the River Slaney overflowed. Dublin saw streets turn into rivers, with emergency services rescuing motorists from floodwaters on roads like Nutgrove Avenue. Power outages affected thousands—ESB Networks reported up to 20,000 properties without electricity at peak—while travel ground to a halt with major disruptions on motorways, including partial closures, and hundreds of schools closed.

Met Éireann issued nationwide status yellow warnings, urging people to avoid coastal areas as the storm tracked northwards. Forecasters warned the worst was not over, with further rain threatening additional flooding. Communities rallied with sandbags and rescues, but the damage underscored Ireland’s vulnerability to intensifying Atlantic storms.
