Dr Colm Henry has said that Ireland’s Covid-19 case rate is deteriorating more rapidly than anywhere else in Europe.
Speaking about the sudden increase in cases, Henry said that the HSE have not seen this level of concern since the pandemic began in March.
Henry said that there has been a 5% increase in referrals for testing and if trends were to continue we could see 1,000 cases per day by the end of the month and 1,500 a day in early January.
He added that there was a sharp escalation upwards and the curve was heading in a vertical direction.
