HSE say over 15,000 people have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine

The Chief executive of the HSE Paul Reid has revealed that over 15,000 people have been given the first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Speaking at a HSE briefing Reid said that of Thursday a total of 15,314 people have been given the vaccine.

Reid who also confirmed that 81,900 doses of the vaccine has arrived in the country, also said that the HSE plans to have 35,000 people injected by the end of the week.

The news comes as the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar announced on Thursday that the Department of Health could have 250,000 people vaccinated by the end of March.

Varadkar said that with the expected arrival of the Moderna vaccine, the Department are on track to achieve the above numbers with both allocations by Moderna and Pfizer and BioNtech’s vaccines.

He added that the vaccination programme could be significantly ramped up in the coming weeks as further vaccines are set to be reviewed for approval by the European Medicines Agency.
