In a written submission, HSE bosses will be requesting an extra €2bn for their 2016 funding requirements.
Estimates put this year HSE’s budget overrun at half a billion euro.
If granted, the extra monies for the health department would mean that all of the financial leeway that the Government is expecting to have for Budget 2016 would swiftly evaporate.
According to HSE’s Director General Tony O’Brien, if the monies are not forthcoming, the department won’t be able to address the needs of the population.
