Tánaiste and Foreign Secretary Michael Martin said they had confidence in Justice Minister Helen McEntee and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, reports RTE.
Speaking in Cork City this morning, he said the government’s current priorities were protecting citizens and supporting An Garda Síochána.
The announcement comes after Sinn Féin TD Louise O’Reilly dismissed Prime Minister Ms McEntee from office.
Failing this, the party will consider all options, including a no-confidence motion, reports RTE.
Following the riots in Dublin city centre on Thursday evening, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou Macdonald said she had no confidence in the minister or the Garda commissioner.
Ms McDonald said the Government and the Garda Commissioner had been repeatedly warned “for a very long time” that there was a security problem in Dublin city centre.
This morning the Tánaiste said it was not the time to question the gardaí or gardaí leadership as the country was largely under attack last Thursday evening in the context of attacks on public transport, burning buses, assaults on drivers and gardaí and shoplifting and looting, reports RTE.
