Independents do not bring stability to coalitions, Roderic O’Gorman stated as part of his appeal for support for the Green Party, reports Breaking News.
Mr. O’Gorman noted that it appears likely Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will return to Government but emphasized they would require assistance to secure a majority.
He pointed out that this could lead to the inclusion of “right-wing independents” or “small populist parties” to boost support.
He expressed that it is evident to him that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are seeking a coalition partner that offers them “the path of least resistance,” while asserting that the “Green Party is fiercely dedicated,” reports Breaking News.
He also mentioned: “I get the impression that the sentiment from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is that they would prefer a more straightforward experience in the upcoming government – and I worry they might turn to these small populist parties and right-wing independents,” reports Breaking News.
Mr. O’Gorman, who has served as the minister for integration in the coalition since 2020, contended that the Green Party could continue to ensure stability in government, especially considering potential economic shocks ahead.
The concern surrounding Donald Trump’s win in the US presidential election has intensified fears that his administration’s proposals regarding corporation tax and tariffs could profoundly affect Ireland’s economic framework.
As the public prepares to make their decisions before the polls open on Friday, he stated: “Our message to voters today is: ‘Do not let us inadvertently enter a Conservative government in this country,” reports Breaking News.
“We know that the Green Party provided the direction of the last government on climate, on public transport, on support for families and children.”
He added: “The polls are really close right now, it’s looking likely that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will be returned to government – but they’ll need something extra there. And there is a very real possibility of right-wing independents or small populist parties propping up the next government. And just in the same way as the Green Party provided a progressive direction over the last four-and-a-half years, small parties, populist parties could provide a very negative, a very regressive direction going forward,” reports Breaking News.
