India rejects Pfizer Covid vaccine citing lack of safety data and cases of adverse reaction

India has rejected Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine after the big pharma giant refused to allow a panel of experts to conduct their own independent immunogenicity tests on the experimental MRNA jab.

Immunogenicity means the ability of a vaccine candidate to generate the desired immune response against the pathogen Business Standard reports.

Last Friday Pfizer withdrew its application for license to supply the vaccine in Indian after it informed the country’s panel of experts that it had no plan to generate safety and immunogenicity data in the local population.

The expert panel representing the second most populous nation on Earth noted that there had been several serious adverse reactions to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the causality of these events was being investigated while the country is already weary after adverse reactions to vaccine trials in the past.
