Ineffective? Covid case numbers rise in the world’s most vaccinated country

This week, The Seychelles Health Ministry reported that the number of active Coronavirus cases “had more than doubled” in a week to 2,486 infected people. However, alarm bells have started to ring when the Health Ministry reported that 37% of the new cases were fully vaccinated, having received two vaccine doses.

With a population of nearly 100,000, the Seychelles is the most vaccinated country in the World with 57% of the population having received their second dose of the Chinese manufactured Sinopharm vaccine and the rest with Covishield, a vaccine made in India under a license from AstraZeneca.

Last week the Seychelles re-imposed restrictions including closing schools, cancelling sports events and banning mingling of households.

According to Time, the World Health Organization said vaccine failure in the Seychelles couldn’t be determined without a detailed assessment and that it was working on evaluating the situation.
