INMO calls on the Minister for Health to do the right thing as €100 pay for student nurses doesn’t represent the risks they face

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called on the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to do the right thing and offer student nurses better pay.

In a statement released via Twitter, the INMO say the current offer of €100 per week grant doesn’t reflect the high risk that student nurses face.

The INMO’s response comes after a report was issued by the Department of Health outlining the role of student nurses.

However the INMO say that the report which is now outdated doesn’t outline the risks that student nurses face in the coming weeks and months ahead following a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases.

They also say they are looking for a face to face meeting with the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to discuss the current reality faced by nursing and midwifery students.

The statement goes on to say that the Minister for Health should offer students healthcare assistance rate which would better reflect their risks and work undertaken in Covid-19 intensive hospitals.
