Innocent man who spent nearly three decades on death row finally walks free

Anthony Ray Hinton

Justice has finally been served on Anthony Ray Hinton, 58, after a fight for freedom lasting decades.

Hinton spent nearly 30 years of his life in prison, for a crime he did not commit.

He was convicted of murder in 1985, after two Birmingham-area, fast-food restaurant managers, John Davidson and Thomas Wayne Vason, were murdered.

However, a new trial was ordered in 2014, after a testimony from firearms experts 12 years earlier stated that the gun Hinton was supposed to have used to commit the crimes could not be matched to the evidence available in either case. The two killings could not be linked to each other.

Mr. Hinton was released this morning from the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham. After walking out of prison, he hugged his family and said: “Thank you Jesus.”
