Inspectors may soon be calling to households around the country, looking for proof of how waste is being disposed of.
The issue of illegal dumping is a serious one, and a number of blackspots have emerged around counties in recent times.
Now, inspectors may start calling to households that are not signed up to a waste collection service, seeking proof that rubbish is being disposed of in a legal manner.
Householders who cannot produce such proof may be fined €75. This amount may rise to €2,500 if the case goes to court.
