Several backbenchers, including Jerry Buttimer, Brendan Griffin, Tony Lawlor and Alan Farrell, have asked in no uncertain terms that legislation is introduced to prevent these pension top-ups, labelled by some as “disgusting”.
A number of TDs are said to have prematurely left a parliamentary meeting after the meeting’s chairperson, TD, Catherine Byrne, swiftly moved the pension debate onto the issue of social media.
Jerry Buttimer TD said that there is “deep public frustration” about the payments.
Another TD said “the public won’t forgive us for it.”
