Investigation continues after 21-yr-old woman dies after being struck by garda patrol car in Donegal

An investigation is underway after a 21-year-old woman died after being hit by an Garda Síochána patrol car in the early hours of this morning in County Donegal, reports RTE.

The incident happened at around 3.15am in Ludden, Buncrana.

A Garda spokesperson said the fight had been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

In a statement, the GSOC said it received the payment from the Gardaí following the incident and is now investigating it.

The Buncrana people expressed their condolences and sadness at the young woman’s death.

Councilwoman Rena Donaghy said it shook the city to its core.

“Buncrana awoke to this awful news this morning that a young girl of 21 had lost her life in the early hours of the morning. It’s devastating news. Our heart goes out to her family, to her friends and the entire circle that this affects,” reports RTE.

Cllr Donaghy said she understood the woman was from Derry and was spending the weekend in Buncrancha with her friend.

The area is a popular tourist spot with caravan parks close to Ludden and Lisfinan beaches.

“It’s just horrific news. It’s so sad. We are a neighbouring parish of Derry, just 10 miles up the road. We are very closely associated with Derry and they visit here all the time. Our hearts, sympathy and prayers go out to the family of the poor girl,” Cllr Donaghy said, reports RTE.

The woman’s body has been removed from the scene and an autopsy is to be performed.

The road is closed and local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact Buncrancha Garda Station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
