The remains of three tourists who vanished in northern Mexico last month have been recognised by their relatives, according to a statement released by the state prosecutor’s office in Baja California, reports RTE.

In what officials are considering as a murder inquiry, the corpses of American Carter Rhoad, 30, and Australian brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, were discovered in a well earlier this week.

At a news conference, state prosecutor Maria Elena Andrade stated that the three were thought to have been killed during an effort to steal their pickup vehicle.

The burned-out car was discovered not far away, reports RTE.

Ms. Andrade stated that the companions had travelled to Mexico several times before without incident and that there were gunshot wounds on the bodies.

Later, in a statement, the state prosecutor’s office announced that the remains had been officially recognised as belonging to the missing surfers, reports RTE.

Prosecutors said that three people—two men and one woman—have been taken into custody on suspicion of being connected to the crime.

According to authorities, one of the people apprehended had a history of robbery, drug sales, and violence, reports RTE.
