Dame Penelope Anne Constance Keith, the beloved British actress renowned for her iconic roles in classic sitcoms, passed away on 29 June 2026 at her home in Surrey. She was 86 and had been living with cancer.
Born on 2 April 1940 in Sutton, Surrey, Keith rose to national fame in the 1970s as the indomitable Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life, opposite Richard Briers, Felicity Kendal and Paul Eddington. Her portrayal of the snooty, ever-aspiring suburban housewife captured the hearts of millions with its perfect blend of comic timing and underlying warmth. She later starred as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born (1979–1981), another ratings triumph that cemented her status as a cornerstone of British television comedy.
A versatile performer, Keith enjoyed a long career spanning stage, screen and radio. She received a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014 for services to the arts and charity. She was also a dedicated trustee and supporter of several cultural organisations, including the National Trust and Brooklands Museum.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike, praising her formidable talent and unmistakable upper-class delivery. Her family described her passing as peaceful. Keith is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Rodney Timson, and their two adopted sons. She leaves behind a rich legacy of laughter that defined a golden era of British sitcoms.
