Ireland beaten by Wales in Six Nations opener

Ireland’s Six Nations hopes have been dealt a blow following a 21-16 defeat to Wales this afternoon.

In a game where Ireland would have had hope of winning given Wales poor form over the autumn, it was the Welsh who came out on top as Ireland’s Cardiff mishaps continue.

The Welsh were given a helping hand after Peter O’Mahony got carelessly sent off with just 14 minutes on the clock following a high tackle during a clear out.

Ireland who could have had so much more surprisingly found themselves in the lead at half time following two penalties from Johnny Sexton and a try from Berine on the 37th minute.

However that was as good as it got for Andy Farrell’s men as costly decisions i  the second half gave Wales a much needed victory.

Scores are as follows:

Wales 21

Tries: North (49), Rees-Zammit (59)
Conversions: Halfpenny (60)
Penalties: Halfpenny (5,19,66)

Ireland 16

Tries: Beirne (37)
Conversions: Sexton (39)
Penalties: Sexton (29,35), Burns (72)
