Ireland could soon be getting another National Bank Holiday which would honour the day marriage equality came into effect

The country could soon be set to get another Bank Holiday after there has been strong calls to declared May 23rd a national holiday as it was officially the day on marriage equality came into effect.

The news has come after Sinn Fein’s Padraig MacLochlainn raised the subject in the Dáil this afternoon, Mr MacLochlainn spoke about the proposal after he received a letter he from a gay man who called for the Bank Holiday as a way to celebrate the historic day.

MacLochlainn read the letter to fellow TD’s which said: “In a hundred years time the 23rd of May will be seen not Ireland’s, but one of humanity’s proudest moments because it was a day when equality conquered fear.” “Perhaps May 23rd should become a bank holiday, and called equality day? To remind future generations of the significance of not just our emancipation, but the equality of every citizen.” It is understood the proposal will be discussed some time in the future.
