The Taoiseach has stated that terrorism remains a threat to Ireland, reports Breaking News.
Simon Harris stated that gardaà are regularly monitoring such topics and that Ireland should “always be conscious” of the hazards associated with terrorism and extremism.
His remarks coincide with a wave of radical organisations threatening political officials.
Additionally, it comes after a report stating that the Garda Commissioner raised the threat level of violent political radicals from moderate to significant, reports Breaking News.
Mr. Harris stated that State security agencies take the threat of terrorism seriously. He has received threats against both him and the house he lives with his wife and kids.
He declared, “We should never think that Ireland is immune from the threats we see in other countries. Neither internal nor foreign terrorism poses a threat to us. However, I have no doubt that the gardaà will treat these cases with extreme gravity,” reports Breaking News.
Refusing to acknowledge the shift in security strategy, he spoke with media on Sunday at the Tullow Agricultural Show in County Carlow.
According to The Sunday Times article, an assault is deemed likely due to the elevated danger level.
“I am confident that when we look at the laws of the land, that our laws are robust,” Mr. Harris said in response to a question about whether he would be ready to establish stricter legislation on threats against public people, reports Breaking News.
The Taoiseach declared that gardaà are “very satisfied” with the work they perform to keep people safe and that they would be given all resources necessary to enforce those standards.
When asked about his worries over the political campaign atmosphere leading up to the next election, Mr. Harris responded, “We need to have a balanced conversation about this – our country hasn’t changed dramatically.”
“This is a country full of decent people and our politicians of all political persuasions live in their communities and move amongst people and are accessible to the public. I don’t think we should allow a small-in-number group of people distort who we are as a people. I haven’t detected any significant shift from the people of Ireland right across the country,” reports Breaking News.
