Ireland next? Paris votes to triple paid parking for SUV jeeps

Drivers’ associations in Paris are furiously opposing city hall due to a push to triple parking fees for large SUV-style cars, reports RTE.

Approximately 1.3 million people in the French capital are able to vote on the proposed change, which would charge €18 per hour for parking in central districts for automobiles weighing 1.6 tonnes or more, and €12 outside of them.

Fully electric vehicles would need to weigh more than two tonnes in order to be impacted; however, individuals who live or work in Paris, taxi drivers, craftspeople, medical professionals, and people with disabilities would not be.

“The bigger they are, the more they pollute,” Paris’s Socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo said in December to justify the step, reports RTE.

At one polling place in the city’s 10th district, the majority of voters declared that they supported the increased costs.

A 51-year-old teacher named Caroline, who wished to remain anonymous, supported the decision “for obvious environmental reasons” and added that “to be honest, no-one really needs an SUV in Paris,” reports RTE.
