Irish Navy ship sent to the Mediterranean to aid in migrant crisis

The L.E Eithne will soon leave Cork, bound for Mediterranean waters in a search and rescue mission.

Carrying 68 sailors and two army medics, the ship will become part of an international flotilla to tackle the rising issue of people-smuggling between African and European shores.

Almost 2,000 people have perished this year so far while attempting the perilous journey, often in cramme, un-seaworthy vessels.

The arrival of summertime has brought about calmer waters in the Mediterranean, and an increase in illegal migrant traffic is expected.
