Irish teenagers have better literacy skills than world peers, study finds

According to tests conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Irish 15-year-olds outperform their peers in the EU and all OECD countries in literacy skills, reports RTE.

They perform significantly better than the OECD average in maths and science.

The organisation’s Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests, which measure skills and knowledge in three key areas, are typically administered every three years.

But the latest round, which tested 690,000 15-year-olds in 81 countries, was delayed for a year because of the pandemic, reports RTE.

In reading, Irish young people’s reading scores outperform all other OECD countries and are second only to Singapore among the 81 countries and territories that took part in the study.

Irish 15-year-olds are estimated to be ranked 12th in science, while their results in maths rank Ireland 11th.

In 2018, Ireland was ranked 21st and 22nd in maths and science, reports RTE.
