Irish Water now phoning people to tell them the company will fix leaks only if they have paid their bill

The latest in Irish Water’s quickly dwindling box of dirty tricks is to ring people pretending to have “identified” leaks, and tell them they will be fixed only if the bill has been paid.

Independent Cork councillor Kieran McCarthy has made these claims today, saying that “Not only is it a fiction for Irish Water to suggest it can identify leaks directly under people’s homes, without ever examining the sites, but to suggest so, just for the purpose of encouraging those people to pay their water bills, is downright dishonest and probably illegal”.

The dying utility has separately begun contacting customers with an overdue balance in their account.

“Customers may be contacted once the payment terms expire on a second overdue bill,” a spokesperson for the company said.
