It’s still hard to believe it this morning. Second-generation Irishman (he considers himself fully Irish) Tyson Fury has been crowned the Heavyweight Champion of the World after beating Wladimir Klitschko on points late last night in Düsseldorf.
The 27-yr-old managed to do what many considered the impossible and beat the 6ft 6 Ukrainian. Fury, the former British, Irish, European, and Commonwealth champion, ended Klitschko’s heavyweight reign on a points victory and took the Ukrainian’s WBA, IBF and minor WBO and IBO belts home to Manchester with him.
Fury’s ancestry is all Irish from every corner of the country. His father was born in Tipperary, his mother in Belfast and his granddad in Galway.
As stated, the 6ft 9 boxer considers himself Irish and he is the first World Heavyweight Champion “we” have… but for how long though? A rematch clause was part of the 39-yr-old Klitschko’s contract. Bring on summer 2016 is all I can say!
