A young off-duty Garda is today in a serious condition in hospital after a shooting incident in New Orleans.

Garda Brian Hanrahan, believed to be in his late 20s and originally from Tipperary, sustained gunshot wounds during a botched mugging yesterday morning.

He was shot twice, one bullet went straight through his leg causing serious exit wounds, and another bullet became lodged in his torso, causing damage to internal organs.

It is understood that he has been placed under induced coma to facilitate his treatment.

Mr. Hanrahan got married recently and has a one year old baby girl.

The young man and his father were enjoying a road trip down Route 66 when the incident happened. He was due to return to Ireland in the first week of February.
