Islamic State militants have released a photo that they claim shows the improvised bomb used to bring down a Russian passenger jet in Egypt. The photowas published by Islamic State’s propaganda magazine Dabiq. The photo shows a soft drink can and what is assumed to be a detonator and switch. The ill-fated Metrojet plane crashed last month in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 people on board. Russia confirmed that the plane was brought down by a bomb and offered a £33m reward for information. Russian bombers have begun to carry out strikes in Syria, attacking IS oil infrastructure. IS claimed it exploited a loophole at Sharm el Sheikh airport, where the plane took off from, in order to smuggle a bomb on board.
