Israel faces growing diplomatic isolation over its war in Gaza, with the United Nations demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and US President Joe Biden saying the “indiscriminate” bombing of civilians is costing international support, reports RTE.

As intense fighting rages simultaneously north and south of the enclave, Israeli troops today reported their worst battle casualties in more than a month, including a colonel, the highest-ranking officer ever killed in a ground operation.

Warplanes have again bombarded the entire Gaza Strip, and aid officials say the arrival of a wet winter has worsened conditions for tens of thousands of families sleeping in makeshift tents, reports RTE.

Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have already lost their homes.

Israel launched an operation to eliminate the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza after militants breached the border fence on October 7, killing 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and taking 240 hostages, reports RTE.
