Italy rocked by murder of schoolgirl in Rome

Italy has been shaken by the savage rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Rome, with the capital’s mayor declaring a day of mourning.

Desiree Mariottini, a 16 year old from Lazio, was found dead in a disused construction site in the centre of the city. She was raped and died after taking a cocktail of drugs. Four men are on trial, suspected of supplying her with drugs and abusing her, the Mirror reports. A witness told investigators that one of the suspects said ‘better she is dead than us in prison’, suggesting that the four dealers let her die from the drugs to cover up their crime.

Although safer than other cities in Italy, in many areas of Rome violence and drugs are becoming an increasing problem for authorities. The San Lorenzo district, situated to the south of the city’s Termini train station, has long been known as a hotspot for crime and is where this recent tragic case occurred.
