Following the wounding of Republican competitor Donald Trump by a would-be assassin, US President Joe Biden has chosen the official setting of the White House Oval Office to emphasise the need for divided Americans to come together, reports RTE.
The shooting incident involving Mr. Trump “calls on all of us to take a step back,” Mr. Biden stated.
He expressed gratitude that Donald Trump was not gravely hurt.
“My fellow Americans, I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics.. politics must never be a literal battlefield, God forbid a killing field. All of us now face the time of testing as the election approaches. The higher the stakes, the more fervent the passions become,” he added, reports RTE.
“No matter how strong, our convictions must never descend into violence… It’s time to cool it down.”
He asserted that Americans ought to unite and never forget that they are neighbours, friends, coworkers, and fellow citizens rather than adversaries.
Mr. Biden stated in the passionate and touching speech that an American citizen was murdered and died for merely using his right to vote for the candidate of his choice, reports RTE.
