Judge Martin Nolan asks for probation service report on migrant accused of trying to abduct 5-yr-old child

A judge has ordered the Probation Services to conduct an evaluation of a man who tried to kidnap a five-year-old child from a Dublin apartment complex in September of last year, reports Breaking News.

Before the two kids fled, the boy’s elder sister was able to shove Visak Rajesh Leela, 26, away from her brother, according to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Leela, who lives in South Dublin, entered a guilty plea to the attempted kidnapping from a Dublin apartment complex on September 14th of last year, reports Breaking News.

After attending a party, the defendant admitted to the gardaí that he was drunk and could not recall the incident. He threw the youngster out of the building and hurried after him, saying he had no idea why.

Still, he implied that maybe he believed he knew the kids.

Judge Martin Nolan ordered the Probation Services to prepare a report after hearing the case’s facts on Thursday and postponing it until Friday, reports Breaking News.

The court ordered the compilation of the study, which includes an evaluation of Leela’s risk of reoffending, citing “troubling aspects” in the case.

He placed Leela on bail until April 28th and postponed the proceedings until then, reports Breaking News.

The Garda At his sentencing hearing on Thursday, Laura McDermott stated that Leela was leaving a party at the apartment complex at nine o’clock that night when he came into two kids playing outside their building.

After the kids entered, the defendant motioned for the little boy to let him in, and the youngster complied. Then Leela chased after the kid and dragged him to the door. The youngster was then pushed out the door by him. Judge Nolan was given footage of this occurrence, reports Breaking News.

According to Gda McDermott, the defendant was pushed into bushes in the back by the boy’s sister, who raced out after her younger brother. This was revealed during the girl’s expert interviews but was not seen on the CCTV film.

The video then showed the defendant following the kids back to the entryway and squatting to talk to them, reports Breaking News.

After the girl buzzed her parents, the kids were able to enter, go back home, and inform their parents of what had transpired. In a matter of minutes, gardaí came and CCTV video was taken from the security hut.

Leela had gone to a party in the apartment complex, according to the Gardaí. The host called him and asked him to come back, so he did, reports Breaking News.

Gda McDermott stated that she did not think the defendant was inebriated since he was able to stand up straight, did not slur his speech, and did not smell of alcohol.

She did concur, though, that a doctor did temporarily halt his arrest after determining he was drunk, reports Breaking News.

Although Leela admitted to the gardaí that he couldn’t recall the event, he acknowledged that he was in the video. He clarified that over the course of many hours, he had consumed three shots of Jäger and one ounce of Jameson.

He explained to them that he was from India and had arrived on a student visa in October 2023. In addition to working part-time, he was scheduled to finish his MBA at Dublin Business School, reports Breaking News.

The parents of the children wrote a victim impact statement, which was presented to the court without being read out loud.

During the defense’s cross-examination, Gda McDermott acknowledged that the children returned to their parents in a matter of minutes and that the incident was brief, reports Breaking News.

She also concurred that he was not wearing shoes when he returned to the scene, and that the gardaí had never ordered him to do so.

“What did he say when you asked him why he did it?” He couldn’t remember why he had done it,” she replied. “He said he was thinking of his relatives and cousins back home,” reports Breaking News.

According to the court, Leela voluntarily turned up his phone and other electronics, which were examined and given back to him when no evidence was discovered.

Even though four drinks might not seem like much, his client never drinks, his lawyer informed the court, reports Breaking News.

“He’s of the belief that he thought he might have known these children,” he said. “When he sobered up and was told what he did, he had the shock of his life.”

Counsel clarified that he did not come from “any means,” that his parents are in Qatar, and that he has no siblings.

He does, however, hold a master’s degree in marketing and a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He is heartbroken that he would no longer be able to pursue his MSC in Marketing, which he had also lined up for, reports Breaking News.
