Judge who handed down Crotty sentence allowing him to walk is retiring this week

This week marks the retirement of the judge who sentenced a 22-year-old serving soldier who had battered a lady unconscious during an incident in Limerick City two years ago to a three-year suspended sentence, reports RTE.

Judge Tom O’Donnell, who has been involved in the Limerick legal system for over 50 years—having first served as an attorney and then as a judge of the District and Circuit courts in Limerick—will step down from the bench on Wednesday, as he announced a few weeks ago.

The public outrage that followed his decision last week to sentence Cathal Crotty of Parkroe Heights, Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, to three years in prison with a suspended sentence had nothing to do with the date of his last court appearance, reports RTE.

Her life has been severely impacted by the terrible physical injuries to her face and body, concussion, and panic attacks. She was forced to quit her work and is now living in constant terror and dread.

Following the attack, the accused—who is stationed in Limerick’s Sarsfield Barracks—bragged about it on social media.

Ms. O’Brien expressed outrage over the fact that her attacker did not receive a jail sentence, claiming that this denied justice to her and other women who had also been the victims of violent attacks, as well as sending a very dangerous message to the public that attacking a woman is normal and does not result in jail time, reports RTE.
