“Justice system is a joke” – Mixed reactions to Nigerian truck driver, with 9 convictions, who killed Irishman in hit and run getting just 1 year in jail

There’s been a very mixed reaction to a court case that has yet again been deemed as the Irish justice system “being a complete and utter joke”.

A Nigerian truck driver with nine previous convictions who ran a red light before killing Irishman Gerry Whyte at a pedestrian crossing has been jailed for just one year.

Prince Aibangbe fled the scene after hitting Mr Whyte on the Swords Road, Whitehall, at the Collins Avenue Junction on May 30th last year but was later apprehended by Gardai after his truck was tracked down using CCTV footage.

The case has provoked shock and anger as people are questioning why the convicted criminal was still allowed on Irish roads and more to the point, why the criminal turned killer was still permitted to reside in Ireland at all.

The fact that he had not been deported and the mind bogglingly lenient sentence has led many to question why certain ethnicities in Ireland appear to receive more lenient treatment before the law.
