In her first interview with a major news outlet since announcing her candidature as the Democratic contender for US president, Kamala Harris pledged to take a more aggressive stance against migration along the southern border of the US and said that she would not withhold arms from Israel, reports RTE.
With little over two months before November 5th, the election, Ms. Harris sought to demonstrate her knowledge of the subjects and give Americans an idea of her policy ideas in her interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash.
Ms. Harris pledged to “enforce our laws” against border crossings and said that she would step up efforts to pass comprehensive border legislation that would limit immigration into the US.
“We have laws that have to be followed and enforced, that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally, and there should be consequences,” she said, reports RTE.
She also echoed President Joe Biden’s strong pro-Israel sentiments and dismissed requests from certain Democratic Party members to reconsider the US’s arms sales to Israel in light of the high number of Palestinian deaths in Gaza.
If elected in November, Ms. Harris declared she would not reverse Mr. Biden’s stance on arming Israel for its conflict in Gaza, reports RTE.
She said, “No,” when asked if she would go off course and deny Israel access to weaponry.
She stated that while “we must get a deal done” to achieve a truce in the Gaza conflict, she still favours a strong Israel.
Ms. Harris said, “No, we have to get a (ceasefire and hostage) deal done,” when asked whether she would not take her firearm, reports RTE.
