As the government prioritises intaking ever greater numbers of refugees from Ukraine and elsewhere the Irish people are taking a big step closer to breaking point this month as 1.2 million households will see energy costs increase by hundreds of euro this month.
1.2million Electric Ireland customers will be hit with combined further increases of €477 for gas and electricity from August 1st as families already struggle with dramatically increasing costs for food and other basic household needs.
This will mark the 58th energy price hike for Irish households in just 18 months.
Bord Gais Energy posted profits of €39.5million in the first six months of 2022 – up 74% on 2021 – despite raising prices last August and October 2021 and again in April while Electric Ireland’s parent company posted profits of €679m in 2021 – up 10% on 2020 the Irish Mirror reported.
As Irish families near breaking point and energy companies shamelessly profiteer from the inflation and energy crisis the government departments and local authorities are focused on housing and supporting refugees.
